Accounting I

My  name is Simone Keize, I have been a college professor here at Broward College for over two years. My background experience includes over 7 years of public accounting experience doing financial audits, financial statement preparation and governmental accounting. I am a Florida Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
 
Introduction to Course: As the first course of the accounting series, this course concludes the study of financial accounting. Topics covered include plant assets, current liabilities, payroll, corporations, partnerships and cash flow statements. This class is excellent for students who wish to get a more in depth understanding of accounting and the role of an accountant in todays working environment.

This is a 3-credit hour blended course. Normally, a 3-credit hour on-campus course would meet two times each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 3 hours per week or 48 hours per term. This class is strictly online, hence all assignments, tests and correspondence will be online. Other online activities will include graded discussions, graded assignments, a group project, and graded online quizzes.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

        1. Explain the nature and purpose of accounting.
        2. Describe how generally accepted accounting principles have evolved to form the underlying basis for accounting practice.
        3. Perform the following: analyzing transactions, recording transactions, posting to accounts, and preparation of a trial balance.
        4. Perrform the following steps in the accounting cycle: the preparation of financial statements and closing procedures.
        5. Describe the accounting for businesses that buy and sell merchandise.
        6. Prepare financial statements, adjusting entries, closing entries, and a post-closing trial balance for a merchandising enterprises.
        7. Prepare adjusting entries for deferrals and accruals.
        8. Describe how an accounting system provides information to management for planning and controlling operations
        9.  Describe the concepts of internal control over cash; use of a checking account; and procedures for monthly bank
          10.

Course Material

      You need the following to be successful in the course:

      1. Fundamental Accounting Principles (Wild-20th edition) – Wild, Shaw, Chiappetta; McGraw-Hill Companies. ISBN: 0078110874.  The textbook is also available as an e-book with the purchase of a registration code.
      2. A non-programmable four-function calculator; any other calculator is not permitted during a test. (E.g. palm pilot, cell phones, graphing/scientific calculators…)
      3. A note book, pencil and eraser
      4. Scantrons (needed on test days)

      How to Access this Course once you are Enrolled in this Course

      This class may be access throught the Desire to Learn website on the Broward College website (please see a direct link below). To log into the website you will need the following :
      • Your BConline User Name is the same as your BC email ID.
      • Your BConline password is the same as your BC email PIN code.
      • If you need login information, obtain BC email user ID and PIN code before attempting to login to BConline.
      • The BC email address site, click on "ID Lookup", then enter your Student# (or INTL Student ID#) and PIN code (2 digit birth month and 4 digit year). Write down your email ID (not the @mail.broward.edu part), which is your BConline User Name.
